Literacy Volunteers of Maricopa County, Inc. Location: Arizona (AZ)
Abstract:
One-to-one tutoring
LVMC's primary teaching model is the one-to-one tutor. Since 1982, thousands of volunteers have worked within the community teaching adults to read or speak English, as well as teach their students skill needs in everyday life. Our volunteers provided over 125,000 hours of instruction to their students in LVMC's last fiscal year.
The LEARN Center
Computer-assisted instruction is offered in our Phoenix LEARN Centers. Individuals on probation, workplace learners and individuals from the community attend lab classes to improve their reading, comprehension skills, English, or to prepare for the GED exam using extensive software in the lab.
Community Technology Center
This state-of-the-art computer lab teaches adults "computer literacy" which includes the basics of using a computer, accessing the Internet, and using Microsoft programs. The goal of the Technology Center is to decrease the number of individuals impacted by the "digital divide."
Family Literacy
LVMC expanded into the area of working with families in the elementary school setting in 1995. We provide training in basic education and parenting for the parents of pre-school and kindergarten children, addressing the critical cause and effect link between illiteracy and low economic prospects for families.
Workplace Education
LVMC has been developing and working with employers to provide services for employees who will be able to increase job performance by increasing their learning. Since 1997, LVMC has put an emphasis on broadly expanding our workplace programs and successfully has developed a stronger workplace assessment program to help link services with new industries.

Mayor's Commission on Literacy Location: Pennsylvania (PA)
Abstract:
Formed in 1983, the Mayor's Commission on Literacy was the first literacy agency in the country to be established by a local governing body. While there were literacy activities underway in Philadelphia at that time, general awareness of the extent of the need was limited. To address this issue, the city had to focus attention on the literacy needs of its adults, coordinate the efforts of existing programs, and provide educational opportunities for increased numbers of adults. The MCOL was established to ensure that quality education is available to equip all adults in Philadelphia with the literacy skills necessary for the workforce, parenting, and community life.
Throughout its history the Commission has been a leader, both locally and nationally. The MCOL has spearheaded efforts in using technology to enhance adult learning, has sponsored a local forum for the National Literacy Summit 2000, and has overseen fantastic growth in the quantity and quality of learning sites and opportunities for Philadelphia adults to gain the skills necessary to meet their goals.
Perhaps the most important aspects of the MCOL's activities are those that brought the organization into existence in the early 1980's: cooperation and collaboration. The Commission continues in this spirit to work closely with Philadelphia literacy organizations, local corporations, social service providers, government agencies, community groups, religious leaders, and adult learners to ensure that the voices of all stakeholders are heard.

Microsoft Digital Inclusion Location: Abstract:
Microsoft has a commitment to help end the "Digital Divide", a term first introduced into national public policy discourse over a decade ago. The idea is that people who have access to computers, the Web, and digital literacy training are simply more likely to be prosperous than those who do not. Now some of the most practical and pertinent discussions about how to deal with the consequences of the Digital Divide are occurring at the state and local government levels.
