Abstract:

AchieveAbility is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization working to permanently break the cycle of poverty for single parent, low income, formerly homeless families through education, supportive services, community and economic development, housing and accountability. Digital Inclusion Project AchieveAbility has worked with United Way and its project partners Cisco Systems, UNISYS, IBM, One Economy Corporation, PEC and Teaming for Technology, to ensure that the AchieveAbility families do not land on the disadvantaged side of the digital divide. The project enables AchieveAbility families to access the Internet and its computer center's resources from their homes. The project has also been instrumental in keeping the AchieveAbility Computer Center at the forefront of technologies relevant to current education and job environments. Teen Technology Network (TTN) AchieveAbility and United Way's Teaming for Technology group have provided AchieveAbility and neighborhood teens the opportunity to develop their use of technology as a tool for personal development. AchieveAbility and local neighborhood teens come to the AchieveAbility Computer Center for 60 hours of classes. At these classes, teens are engaged in academic activities, service learning projects and an online mentoring relationship with adults from the community. Various internships are available upon completion of the program. To date, TTN participants have refurbished over 50 computers, set up the networks at AchieveAbility's new offices and created a community website for Haddington.

California Advanced Services Fund

Abstract:

On December 20, 2007, the Commission issued D.07-12-054 establishing the California Advanced Services Fund (CASF).  Beginning on January 1, 2008, the CASF will be funded by a 0.25% surcharge collected from all end users.  The CASF, an expected two-year program, will promote universal service in unserved and underserved areas in the state by awarding funding to qualifying certificated applicant carriers.  The funding will be used for projects that will a) provide broadband services to areas currently without broadband access and b) build out facilities in underserved areas if funds are still available.  Carrier workshops are expected to be held during February, 2008, to determine criteria and application processes in order for carriers to apply for CASF monies beginning June 2, 2008.
