USDA Announces $267 Million Rural Broadband Loan
USDA Rural Development Under Secretary Thomas C. Dorr today announced that Open Range Communications, headquartered in Denver, Colo., has been approved to receive a $267 million loan from USDA Rural Development to provide broadband service to 518 rural communities in 17 states.

City Uses Earthlink Cash To Bring Rural Areas Online
Earthlink had to pay the city $5 million after defaulting on a contract to build a citywide wireless network last year. Today, Mayor Bill White announced the city will use about $3.5 million of that money to build 10 wifi network "bubbles" in low-income parts of Houston to give residents Internet access they otherwise would do without.

New York Assembly May Cut Spitzer’s Broadband Plan
The New York State Senate and Assembly are at odds with one another over how to close the state’s $4.6 billion budget gap for this year. One part of the plan is to cut about $10 million from the budget that has been set aside to develop a statewide broadband plan that would work to bridge the state’s digital divide.
